Alan grew up in Staunton and attended Hampden Sydney College, where he graduated magna cum laude with his B.A. degree in 1984. Alan was a member of Phi Beta Kappa at Hampden-Sydney and of the Order of the Coif at W&L Law.
Alan began practicing law with Willcox & Savage, P.C. in Norfolk, VA, and worked there until he returned to Staunton in 1992 to join Virginia B. Garrison, his mother, in the practice of law. Together, they formed Garrison Law Offices, P.C., where he worked until joining TimberlakeSmith in 2009.
