Rodney’s law practice has focused almost exclusively over the last 15 years on the representation of more than 35 Virginia public school boards and regional educational programs across the Commonwealth. Public education clients statewide value his judgment and steady counsel on the vast array of legal challenges they confront. His pragmatism and ability to “see around corners” makes him an invaluable resource to his public school clients, who have the weighty responsibility of managing and leading their respective school divisions.
He regularly advises his clients on virtually every substantive area of law affecting school boards and the operation of public schools, including constitutional law, employment law, student rights, construction, special education, board governance and inter-governmental relations, and litigation. He has proven experience in helping his clients navigate and effectively manage high-profile matters that involve intense media and public attention. His legal experience has included high-stakes litigation involving the representation of insurers for financial institutions during the Savings and Loans crisis, and the representation of hospitals and physicians in the defense of professional liability claims.
Rodney has been recognized by his peers as a leading Education Law practitioner by his inclusion in the The Best Lawyers in America© every year since 2007 and by his AV Preeminent ranking by Martindale-Hubbell, its highest rating for professional excellence.
His interests go well beyond the law, however. Co-workers at TimberlakeSmith consider him their own personal search engine, at least when it comes to random trivia knowledge. When he’s not practicing law, he spends his time road cycling, reading history and literature, attending Shakespeare performances at Staunton’s Blackfriars Playhouse, and collecting and curating selections for the vinyl music club he organizes.
